The Family Based Treatment of Eating Disorders
Family based treatment is currently the most effective and speedy treatment for an adolescent’s eating disorder. I am well practiced in supporting families through the Family Based Treatment for eating disorders in adolescents (Maudsley Method). With training and supervision from the Children’s Hospital in Westmead (Sydney), the psychiatrists who developed the model and supervisors at the Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders, I am one of few Certified Providers of Family Based Treatment in Victoria.
I offer this evidenced based family based treatment to families who are experiencing the crisis of an eating disorder in a young family member. I understand, that the family can be a vital resource for a young person struggling with an eating disorder, be it clinically diagnosed anorexia or bulimia, or subclinical disordered eating such as severe dieting or body image disturbance.
Family Based Treatment is an empirically informed, researched and demonstrated model of treatment, comprised of three distinct phases. The treatment rests on the notion that the family is best placed to support the young person to recover as they can provide not only the intensity and consistency required, but a loving and familiar environment within which the young person can recover. It is understood that while the family is not the cause of the eating disorder, they are the solution. Due to the seriousness and destructiveness of the problem, restoring the young person to health is the first order of treatment, allowing the adolescent to recover with least harm and interference in development, and during which strengthening of familial relationships can secure the platform from with the adolescent can return to adolescent life.
