Individual Treatment
I offer dynamic psycho-therapy and focussed psychological strategies to individuals who are experiencing a problem that is dominating their life in an unacceptable way; a conflict, crisis or chronic difficulty in relationships, undergoing a change in life either planned for, or forced, or wanting relief from the consequences of loss, trauma, cruelty, neglect and deprivation, or wishing to work on personal growth. Usually, people consult me because they are experiencing emotional or mental pain, and we work to unravel where this arises from, present and the past, and develop a process together to make it meaningful and work better for you. Our work will encompass education, developing new understandings, learning new skills and finding purpose and meaning from the inevitable suffering that is a part of living. This may be through dynamic psychotherapy, motivational enhancement therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, couple therapy, family therapy or a particular combination of the above.
At some stage, it may be useful for me to meet with others who are significant in your life, as they often hold valuable information and can be important resources. Your permission will be sought for this to occur. A thorough assessment that includes close others helps to ensure that the therapy is relevant to your unique circumstances. Assessment occurs over a number of sessions, after which, we collaborate on a treatment plan.
Many people feel some anxiety about coming to therapy, as they don’t know what to expect or expect to feel labelled. This is a normal concern and I hope to help you feel comfortable quickly as we work towards understanding and solutions. Each session will be centered on what is most important to you and what works for you.
My role is to help you identify and understand problems, see more clearly where you may be unwittingly contributing to an unhelpful pattern and what action you can take against the problem that you figure out are necessary. New skill development and the development of new and more beneficial behavioural patterns are often a focus in treatment.
